Henry Bascom Steagall lived from 1873 to 1943 and was a United States representative from Alabama. He was chairman of the House Committee on Banking and Currency and in 1933 co-sponsored the Glass-Steagall Act with Senator Carter Glass, introducing banking reforms and establishing the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. With Senator Robert F. Wagner he also co-sponsored the Wagner-Steagall National Housing Act of 1937, which created the United States Housing Authority.
