Hein Kotz

Hein Kotz, born in 1935 in Schneidemuhl, then part of Germany and now Pila in Poland, taught comparative and private law as a professor at the University of Konstanz from 1971 to 1978 and at the University of Hamburg from 1981 to 1998. He directed the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg from 1978 to 2000, succeeding Konrad Zweigert, with whom he co-authored Einfuhrung in die Rechtsvergleichung auf dem Gebiete des Privatrechts, Introduction to Comparative Law in the Field of Private Law, the standard German language comparative law textbook that reached its third edition in 1996. He went on to become the founding president of the Bucerius Law School in Hamburg, serving from its establishment in 2000 until 2004.
