Handyala Lakshminarayanaswamy Dattu served as the forty second Chief Justice of India, from September 2014 to December 2015. Born in 1950 in Karnataka, he was enrolled as an advocate in 1975 and practiced in civil, criminal, constitutional and taxation matters before serving as Chief Justice of the Kerala and Chhattisgarh High Courts and joining the Supreme Court in 2008. His fourteen month tenure as Chief Justice, during which he authored one hundred seventeen judgments, was among the longer recent tenures in the office. He later chaired the National Human Rights Commission of India from 2016 to 2020.

As the chief justice, he served for nearly 14 months, from 28 September 2014 to 2 December 2015. Before his elevation as a judge of the Supreme Court of India on 17 December 2008, he had served as the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court and Chhattisgarh High Court.
