Gustav Conrad Hugo (1764 to 1844) was a German jurist who taught law at the University of Gottingen from 1788, becoming a full professor in 1792. He is recognized as the founder of the German Historical School of jurisprudence, criticizing the uncritical blending of Roman and Germanic elements into an ostensibly unified body of law and arguing instead for a systematic historical study of law, an approach later continued and developed by Friedrich Carl von Savigny. His major works include the seven volume Lehrbuch eines civilistischen Cursus, published between 1792 and 1821, and the six volume Civilistisches Magazin, published between 1790 and 1837.
