Gottlieb Planck, who lived from 1824 to 1910, was a German jurist and liberal politician who joined the National Liberal Party in the mid-1860s. In the first commission drafting Germany's civil code, the Burgerliches Gesetzbuch, he was appointed the drafter of family law, and in December 1890 he was elected to the second BGB commission and appointed its chief referent, guiding the code's conception for the German Reich. After the commission's work ended he published, from 1896, the first and for a long time the authoritative commentary on the BGB, and his central role in shaping the code earned him the title father of the BGB in the secondary literature.
