Gopal Ballav Pattanaik (born 1937) was the thirty-second Chief Justice of India, serving briefly from November to December 2002. Born in Cuttack, Odisha, he was enrolled as an advocate at the Orissa High Court in 1962, became a permanent judge of that court in 1983, Chief Justice of the Patna High Court in 1995, and a judge of the Supreme Court of India later that year. He handled landmark cases including the Daniel Latifi decision on the maintenance rights of Muslim women and matters concerning the Babri Masjid site in Ayodhya.
