George Brown (Belizean judge)

Sir George Noel Brown was a Belizean jurist who lived from 1942 to 2007 and became the second native-born Belizean to serve as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Belize, holding the post from 1991 to 1998 after acting in the role in 1985 and 1986. He rose through more than four decades in the judiciary of Belize, from lay magistrate to crown counsel in the Director of Public Prosecutions office to Solicitor General before his judicial appointment, and was knighted in December 1990. As chief justice he clashed repeatedly with the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council over capital punishment, and every one of the twenty death sentences he imposed that reached appeal was stayed. He resigned in November 1997, continued to sit as an acting Supreme Court justice from 1999, and died on 26 July 2007.
