George Arney (1810-1883) was the second Chief Justice of New Zealand, serving from 1858 to 1875 after his appointment by the Colonial Office. Born in Salisbury, England, he studied at Oxford and was called to the bar in 1837 before arriving in Auckland in 1858. Beyond the bench, he sat on the Legislative Council and briefly administered the government between governors in 1873, and was knighted in 1862 while serving as Chief Justice. After retiring in 1875 he returned to England and settled in Torquay, where he died; Arney Street in Paeroa, New Zealand is named for him.
