Georg Friedrich von Martens lived from 22 February 1756 to 21 February 1821 and was a German jurist and diplomat, educated at the universities of Gottingen, Regensburg and Vienna. He became professor of jurisprudence at Gottingen in 1783 and was ennobled in 1789. In 1808 the King of Westphalia made him a counsellor of state, and in 1810 he served as president of the financial section of the kingdoms council of state. In 1814 the King of Hanover appointed him privy cabinet councillor, and in 1816 he went as the kings representative to the diet of the new German Confederation at Frankfurt.
