What happened when Orlando walked out of the 1919 peace talks in Paris?
Orlando left the Paris talks and returned to Italy to public acclaim over the Fiume dispute.
Italian Prime Minister Vittorio Orlando walked out of the peace talks in Paris and returned to Italy. When his train arrived in Rome he was greeted with cries of "Viva Orlando! Viva Fiume! Viva l'Italia!", a sign that Italians supported his dramatic gesture. The dispute centered on Fiume. A settlement then under discussion would have made Fiume a free city shared between Italy and Yugoslavia, with no Italian Dalmatia, and Italy would have received the Tyrolean Alps up to the Brenner Pass plus Trieste and Istria.
