FAQs

Why is John Henry Merryman called a founder of art law?

He taught the first course of its kind in 1971 at Stanford Law School and helped build art law as a field.

Merryman was a comparative law scholar at Stanford Law School who turned to the law of the visual arts. Stanford's own remembrance says he taught the course in 1971, the first of its kind, and that the art historian Albert Elsen collaborated and co-taught with him. That early teaching is why he is regarded as a founder of art law as a legal discipline in the United States, alongside his standing as the author of The Civil Law Tradition.
