Gabriel Baudry-Lacantinerie

Gabriel Marie Paul Baudry-Lacantinerie was a French jurist who lived from 14 June 1837 to 17 January 1913, born in Saint-Sauveur-d'Aunis and earning his law degree from the University of Poitiers in 1858. He taught civil law at Poitiers from 1868 to 1871 before moving to the University of Bordeaux, where he taught civil law from 1871 to 1903 and served as dean of the law faculty until his death, and he was made a knight of the Legion of Honor for his work. His principal achievement was the Traite theorique et pratique de droit civil, a treatise on French civil law that grew to twenty-nine volumes in its third edition and became one of the standard reference works of French legal doctrine, alongside a shorter three-volume Precis de Droit Civil that reached twelve editions, both remaining required reading for generations of French law students and practitioners.
