Franz Wieacker was a German legal historian, born in 1908 and died in 1994, who studied law at Tubingen, Munich and Gottingen and held professorships at Leipzig, Freiburg and Gottingen. His 1952 book Privatrechtsgeschichte der Neuzeit, substantially expanded in a 1967 second edition, traced the history of European legal thought from the medieval Glossators critical study of Justinian Digest at Bologna through to the modern era, and it became a standard work, translated into English as A History of Private Law in Europe.
