Francois Laurent (1810-1887) was a Belgian jurisconsult and historian who became professor of civil law at the University of Ghent in 1836 after holding a post in the ministry of justice. His authoritative exposition of the Napoleonic Code, the 33-volume Principes de droit civil francais (1869-1878), along with his eight-volume Le droit civil international (1880-1881), built his reputation as a jurist, while his liberal and anti-clerical views made him lasting enemies.
