Fazal Hadi Shinwari was born in 1927 in Shinwar, Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan, an ethnic Pashtun who completed Islamic studies in Kabul and taught at Ibn-i-Sina High School there from 1954. He migrated to Pakistan in 1974 and was a member of the Ittehad-al-Islami political party. Appointed by President Hamid Karzai, he served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Afghanistan from 8 January 2002 to 5 August 2006, and in that role administered the oath of office to President Karzai on 8 December 2004. He died on 21 February 2011 in India, aged 83 or 84, from a stroke.
