Ernest J. Weinrib is a Canadian legal academic who teaches jurisprudence and legal philosophy at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, holding degrees from the University of Toronto and a doctorate from Harvard University. He is known for a distinctive theory of private law that treats tort, contract and restitution as bilateral relationships in which one person's right is always the counterpart of another's duty, and he argues that private law is an autonomous field that cannot be justified by remedies aimed at broader social policy, such as punitive damages. His major books include The Idea of Private Law (1995), Corrective Justice (2012) and Reciprocal Freedom: Private Law and Public Right (2022), and in 2009 he received the Killam Prize for scholarly achievement.
