Ernest Frederick Watermeyer

Ernest Frederick Watermeyer, who lived from 12 October 1880 to 18 January 1958, was a South African jurist who served as the ninth Chief Justice of South Africa from 1943 to 1950. Born in Graaff-Reinet in the Cape Colony, he was educated at Stellenbosch Gymnasium, Bath College and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and was called to the bar of the Inner Temple in England in 1904 and to the Cape bar in 1905. He served as a judge of the Cape Provincial Division from 1922 to 1937 and of the Appellate Division from 1937 to 1942, was made a King's Counsel in 1921, and was the last Chief Justice of South Africa to be appointed a Privy Counsellor.
