Emily Bisharat, who died in 2004, was a Jordanian lawyer, political activist and philanthropist regarded as the first female lawyer in the Kingdom of Jordan. Educated at the Ramallah Friends School and the Syrian-Lebanese College before earning a law degree in London, she returned to Jordan to practice law and, in the 1950s, established the Arab Women's Union and campaigned for women's suffrage. In 1948 she opened an orphanage for Palestinian children displaced by war, in 1953 helped establish Jordan's first nursing school, and in 1954 founded the Arab Women's Federation, through which she remained active in international discussions of Palestinian rights. She bequeathed her fortune, reported at 500,000 Jordanian dinars, to charitable and church institutions.
