Dipak Misra, born in 1953, served as the forty fifth Chief Justice of India from August 2017 to October 2018 and is the nephew of Ranganath Misra, who held the same office from 1990 to 1991. Enrolled at the bar in 1977, he served as Chief Justice of the Patna and Delhi High Courts before joining the Supreme Court in 2011. As Chief Justice he authored landmark rulings partially striking down Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, decriminalizing adultery, and addressing the Cauvery river dispute and the 2012 Delhi gang rape case. His tenure was marked by public criticism from four senior judges in January 2018, though a subsequent impeachment motion against him was rejected.
