Cino da Pistoia was an Italian jurist and poet born in 1270 who died in 1336. He taught law at multiple universities while also composing lyric poetry, and was the university teacher of Bartolus de Saxoferrato as well as a friend and intellectual influence on Dante Alighieri. He is described as the most prolific writer of lyric poetry between Guittone d'Arezzo and Petrarch, helping bridge those two literary traditions, while his legal scholarship on Roman law is credited with initiating the Italian common law tradition.
