Sir Christoffel Joseph Brand (1797 to 1875) was a Cape Colony jurist, politician and statesman who studied law at the University of Leiden, earning his doctorate in 1820, before establishing a law practice in Cape Town in 1821 and becoming one of the first advocates admitted to the Supreme Court of the Cape Colony in 1829. He founded and edited the newspaper De Zuid-Afrikaan, served as the first Speaker of the Cape House of Assembly for twenty years from 1854 to 1873, continued in that role after the introduction of responsible government in 1872, and was knighted in 1860.
