Charles Arthur Russell, Baron Russell of Killowen (1832 to 1900) was an Irish born statesman and lawyer who served as Attorney General for England in 1886 and again from 1892 to 1894, before becoming Lord Chief Justice of England from 1894 to 1900, the first Roman Catholic to hold the office since the Reformation. Born in Newry, County Down, and elected Member of Parliament for Dundalk and then Hackney South, he was a prominent supporter of Irish Home Rule and led the defense of Charles Stewart Parnell at the Parnell Commission hearings of 1888 to 1889, later representing Britain in the Bering Sea Arbitration of 1893 and the Venezuelan boundary arbitration of 1899. He married Ellen Mulholland and had nine children, one of whom, Frank Russell, also became Baron Russell of Killowen.
