Charles de Visscher

Charles Marie Joseph Desire de Visscher was a Belgian scholar and practitioner of international law who lived from 2 August 1884 to 2 January 1973. He taught law at Ghent University from 1911 and later at the Catholic University of Louvain from 1931, and he appeared as counsel before the Permanent Court of International Justice in several cases between 1927 and 1933. Belgium appointed him an ad hoc judge of the Permanent Court of International Justice in 1936 and elected him a full judge in 1937, and he went on to serve on the International Court of Justice from 1946 to 1951. The American Society of International Law awarded him its Manley O. Hudson Medal in 1966, and he became a foreign member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1954.
