Cesar Bengzon

Cesar Fernando Bengzon y Cabrera, who lived from May 29, 1896, to September 3, 1992, was a Filipino jurist who earned a Bachelor of Arts from the Ateneo de Manila in 1915 and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of the Philippines in 1919, placing second in that year's bar examinations. He rose through the Philippine legal system as a law clerk, Solicitor General from 1932, Undersecretary of Justice from 1933, a member of the Court of Appeals from 1936, an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from 1945, briefly Secretary of Justice in 1948, and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines from April 28, 1961, to May 29, 1966. In November 1966 he became the first Filipino appointed to the International Court of Justice, serving until 1976, and at his death in 1992 he was, at age 96, the longest-lived former Chief Justice of the Philippines ever recorded.
