Carlos Santiago Nino was an Argentine legal, moral and political philosopher who lived from 1943 to 1993. He studied law at the University of Buenos Aires and earned a doctorate at Oxford in 1977 under John Finnis and Tony Honore, beginning his career in traditional jurisprudence before turning to moral and political philosophy. In the early 1980s he served as a personal adviser to President Raul Alfonsin and coordinated a committee on democratic reform. Nino developed an epistemic justification of deliberative democracy and a constructivist ethical theory built on three principles, autonomy, inviolability and dignity, and he proposed a consensual theory of punishment blending retributive and utilitarian reasoning; he died in 1993 during a trip to La Paz to advise on constitutional reform.
