Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Gerber was a German legal scholar and Saxon statesman, born in 1823 in Ebeleben, Thuringia, and died in 1891. He studied law at Jena and taught at Erlangen, Jena and Leipzig, becoming a leading authority on civil law often mentioned alongside his contemporary Rudolf von Jhering, and his scholarship significantly shaped the development of German constitutional law in the nineteenth century. He was elected to the North German Reichstag in 1867, served as North German minister of culture from 1871 until his death, and was named chief minister of the Saxon government shortly before he died.
