Beverley Marian McLachlin (born 7 September 1943 in Pincher Creek, Alberta) is a Canadian jurist and author who served as the 17th Chief Justice of Canada from 7 January 2000 to 15 December 2017. She is the longest-serving Chief Justice in Canadian history and the first woman to hold the position, and her tenure is noted for her judicial contributions to interpretation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and to rights protection.
