Baldus de Ubaldis was an Italian jurist born in 1327 who died in 1400. He taught civil and canon law at universities across Italy including Bologna, Perugia, Pisa, Florence, Padua and Pavia, and produced extensive commentaries on Roman legal texts along with around three thousand legal opinions known as consilia. A leading figure in medieval Roman law and the school of postglossators, he advised popes on legal matters during the Western Schism, and his treatise on evidence and proof remained the standard treatment of the subject for centuries.
