Bagir Manan served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Indonesia from May 2001 to October 2008 after being nominated by President Abdurrahman Wahid. Born in 1941 in Kalibalangan, Lampung, he was a professor of constitutional law at Padjadjaran University before his judicial appointment, and after leaving the Supreme Court he chaired Indonesia's Press Council from 2010 to 2016.
