Azo of Bologna (flourished about 1150 to 1230) was an Italian jurist and leading member of the medieval glossators, the school of legal scholars at Bologna who annotated the Roman legal texts of Justinian Corpus Juris Civilis. He is best known for his Summa Codicis, a comprehensive commentary organized around Justinian Code that became a standard legal handbook across medieval Europe and was reprinted for centuries, and for teaching the jurist Accursius. His authority was such that a medieval legal saying held that a case without Azo behind it would not reach court.
