Aziz Mushabber Ahmadi served as the twenty sixth Chief Justice of India, from 1994 to 1997, and was the third Muslim to hold the office. Born in Surat in 1932, he joined the bar in 1954 and served as a judge of the Ahmedabad City Civil and Sessions Court and the Gujarat High Court before his appointment to the Supreme Court in December 1988. Over his Supreme Court tenure he authored two hundred thirty two judgments across eight hundred eleven benches. After retiring in 1997 he served as Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University from 2003 to 2010 and became an advocate for minority rights and education; he died in 2023.
