Antonio Augusto Cancado Trindade, who lived from 17 September 1947 to 29 May 2022, was a Brazilian jurist and international judge who held a law degree from the Federal University of Minas Gerais and a doctorate in international law from Cambridge University. He was a full professor of international relations and law at the University of Brasilia from 1978, and served as a judge of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights from 1994 to 2008, including as its President from 1999 to 2004. He served as a judge of the International Court of Justice from 6 February 2009 until his death in 2022, and authored 52 books and roughly 680 scholarly works on international law over his career.
