Anna Chandy, who lived from 1905 to 1996, was an Indian jurist who became the first female judge in India in 1937, when she was appointed a munsif, a junior civil judge, in the princely state of Travancore. In 1959 she reached a further milestone, becoming the first woman appointed to a High Court in India when she joined the Kerala High Court on February 9 of that year, a step regarded as among the first for a woman to a High Court anywhere in the British Commonwealth and one that drew attention from legal circles in the United Kingdom and Canada. She served on the Kerala High Court until her retirement on April 5, 1967.
