Andres Bello lived from 1781 to 1865, a Venezuelan-born humanist, poet and jurist who settled in Chile and became one of Latin America's most influential legal scholars. He was the principal author of the Chilean Civil Code, enacted in 1855 after decades of drafting work, a codification praised for its clarity and internal coherence that went on to serve as a direct model for the civil codes of Ecuador, Colombia and several other Latin American republics. He also founded and served as the first rector of the University of Chile.
