Andreas von Tuhr was a Russian-German legal scholar, born in 1864 in Saint Petersburg to an ethnic German family and died in 1925. He studied at Heidelberg, Leipzig and Strasbourg, earning his doctorate in 1885, and held professorships at Basel and Strasbourg before relocating to Zurich after the First World War. His multi-volume Der allgemeine Teil des deutschen burgerlichen Rechts, published from 1910 to 1918, became a classic of German civil law doctrine within the Pandectist tradition, translated twice into Spanish, and his personal library became the founding collection of Kyoto University's civil law library.
