Andrea Alciato (1492-1550) was an Italian jurist and writer, born near Milan and later based in Pavia. He is regarded as the founder of the French school of legal humanism, reading the civil law through history, language and classical literature rather than through the older glossing methods, and substituting original research for what earlier commentators had simply repeated. He taught law at several universities, including Bourges from 1529 to 1535, and published extensive legal commentaries alongside historical studies of Roman antiquities. He is also remembered outside law for his Emblemata (1531), a collection pairing Latin verses with woodcuts that founded the emblem book as a literary genre and became widely popular across Europe.
