Amal Kumar Sarkar (1901 to 2001) was the eighth Chief Justice of India, holding the position for a short tenure from March to June 1966 before his own retirement. He studied at Scottish Churches College and Bangabasi College in Calcutta, was called to the bar from Lincoln's Inn in 1929, and became a judge of the Calcutta High Court in 1949 before his elevation to the Supreme Court of India in 1957. He lived to be a centenarian, dying in Calcutta in 2001.
