Amal Clooney, born Amal Alamuddin in 1978 in Beirut, is a Lebanese and British international human rights lawyer and barrister at Doughty Street Chambers. She became Professor of Practice in International Law at the Blavatnik School of Government, Oxford University in 2025 and co-founded the Oxford Institute of Technology and Justice the same year, and earlier served as United Kingdom Special Envoy on Media Freedom from 2019 to 2020. Her clients have included Yazidi activist Nadia Murad, Reuters journalists Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, Filipino journalist Maria Ressa, and 126 Darfur genocide victims she represented at the International Criminal Court. She holds a law degree from Oxford University and a masters degree from New York University School of Law.
