Altamas Kabir served as the thirty ninth Chief Justice of India, from September 2012 to July 2013, coming from a prominent Bengali Muslim family. Born in Calcutta in 1948, he earned his law degree from the University of Calcutta and was admitted to the bar in 1973, rising through the Calcutta High Court and the Chief Justiceship of the Jharkhand High Court before joining the Supreme Court. Over his Supreme Court career he authored three hundred sixty two judgments across six hundred ninety eight benches, delivering notable rulings on human rights, domestic violence and election law. He died in 2017.
