Albert van der Sandt Centlivres

Albert van der Sandt Centlivres (13 January 1887 to 19 September 1966) was a South African judge who served as Chief Justice of South Africa from 1950 to 1957. Born and later dying in Cape Town, he served as a judge of the Cape Provincial Division from 1935 to 1939 and as a Judge of Appeal from 1939 to 1950 before his appointment as Chief Justice. He became known for his judgments during the Coloured vote constitutional crisis, in which he resisted government efforts to remove voting rights from non-white citizens in the Cape Province, and he served as Chancellor of the University of Cape Town from 1950 until his death.
