Abu Abdullah al-Qurtubi (1214-1273) was an Andalusian Sunni Muslim scholar of the Maliki school of Islamic jurisprudence, born in Cordoba and later settled in Egypt. He is best known for his twenty-volume Quranic commentary, Tafsir al-Qurtubi, also called al-Jami li-Ahkam al-Quran, distinguished by its focus on legal rulings drawn from Quranic verses rather than narrative material. His scholarship spanned Quranic exegesis, hadith and Islamic jurisprudence, and he defended Sunni theological positions against the Mutazila.
