Burhan al-Din al-Marghinani, born in full Abul-Hasan Ali ibn Abi Bakr al-Marghinani, was a Hanafi Islamic legal scholar who lived from 1135 to 1197, born in Marghinan near Farghana in present day Uzbekistan and buried in Samarqand after holding the title Shaykh al-Islam. His major work, Al-Hidayah, The Guidance, is an abridgement of his own earlier commentary on Muhammad al-Shaybani's al-Jami al-Saghir, and it became one of the most influential compendia of Hanafi jurisprudence ever written, shaping the later work of Hanafi jurists such as Ibn Abidin.
