Al-Khattabi (931-998) was a tenth century Islamic scholar from Sijistan, in present day Afghanistan, a jurist of the Shafii school and adherent of Ashari theology, unanimously regarded in his time as the leading figure in the sciences of hadith and Shafii jurisprudence. He worked to reconcile what he saw as an unhelpful divide between hadith scholars and jurists, authoring pioneering commentaries on major hadith collections and formulating foundational definitions in hadith criticism that influenced Islamic scholarship for centuries.
