Ahmad ibn Ali al-Rifa'i was a Sunni Muslim preacher, ascetic, jurist, and theologian, best known as the eponymous founder of the Rifa'i tariqa of Islamic Sufism. Sources describe him combining formal training in Islamic jurisprudence with mysticism and an ascetic way of life. The Rifa'i order he founded became one of the most widely followed Sufi orders, historically strongest before being overtaken by the Qadiri order, and remains most common today in West Asia, the Balkans, and South Asia.
