Adarsh Sein Anand

Adarsh Sein Anand served as the twenty ninth Chief Justice of India, from October 1998 to November 2001. Born in 1936 in Jammu and Kashmir, he earned his law degree from the University of Lucknow and a doctorate in constitutional law from the University of London before being called to the bar in 1964. He served as Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court and the Madras High Court before reaching the Supreme Court, where he authored one hundred ninety six judgments across nine hundred eleven benches as Chief Justice. He later chaired the National Human Rights Commission from 2003 to 2006, received the Padma Vibhushan in 2008, and wrote on the constitutional development of Jammu and Kashmir; he died in 2017.
