Abu Uthman al-Sabuni

Ismail ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Sabuni, known as Abu Uthman al-Sabuni, was an eleventh-century Sunni scholar based in Khorasan, remembered as the leading hadith authority of his region and as a jurist of great standing in the Shafi'i school. He was also known as a Quranic exegete, Sufi, theologian, preacher, and orator, and his contemporaries honored him with the title Shaykh al-Islam, a term reserved for him alone in his time. He was fluent in both Persian and Arabic, and the scholar al-Bayhaqi called him the true imam and shaykh of the Muslims of his age.
