Abu Ishaq al-Shatibi (1320-1388) was an Andalusi Sunni scholar from Granada, a jurist and legal theoretician of the Maliki school and an adherent of Ashari theology, regarded in his time as among the leading jurists of that school. He is best known for developing the theories of maqasid al-shariah, the purposes of Islamic law, and maslahah, public interest, set out in his masterwork al-Muwafaqat, which remains foundational to Islamic legal theory. He also worked in Quranic exegesis, hadith and Arabic grammar, and later scholars including Rashid Rida regarded him as a religious revivalist comparable to Ibn Khaldun.
