Abdul Salam Azimi was born in 1936 in Farah Province, Afghanistan, an ethnic Pashtun of the Alizai tribe, and died in January 2026 at the age of 90. He was educated at Al-Azhar University, later taught as a professor at the University of Nebraska Omaha, and served as a legal advisor to Afghan President Hamid Karzai, contributing to the drafting of the 2004 Constitution of Afghanistan. He served as Chief Justice of Afghanistan from 5 August 2006 to 23 October 2014, described in sources as a fair-minded moderate active in upholding the rule of law and improving the country's legal system.
