Ajit Nath Ray lived from January 29, 1912 to December 25, 2009 and was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India from April 25, 1973 until his retirement on January 28, 1977. He was the lone dissenter among the eleven Supreme Court judges who examined the constitutionality of the Bank Nationalization Act in 1969. He came to his appointment to the Supreme Court by way of Presidency College Calcutta, Oriel College Oxford, Gray's Inn, and the Calcutta High Court. His son, Justice Ajoy Nath Ray, became a Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.
