The International Military Tribunal for the Far East (IMTFE) was established by charter on 19 January 1946, issued by General Douglas MacArthur as Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, modeled on the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg. It sat at Ichigaya in Tokyo, in the former Japanese War Ministry building, with eleven judges appointed one each by Australia, Canada, China, France, India, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the Philippines, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States. Its principal proceeding, the Trial of Japanese Major War Criminals, tried 28 high-ranking Japanese military and political leaders from 29 April 1946, with judgment delivered 4-12 November 1948.
